Opposition leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has intensified his criticism of the government over alleged abductions and unlawful detentions, while defending foreign investment in Kenya and calling for action over reported losses suffered by Samburu residents.
Kalonzo, who led opposition leaders on a visit to LifeCare Hospital in Mlolongo to see young activist Collins Otieno, said the alleged use of force and arbitrary arrests had raised serious concerns about the state of the rule of law.
He called on the government to respect constitutional rights and ensure Kenyans can go about their lives without fear of arbitrary arrest, detention or abduction.
The Wiper Patriotic Front and Ukombozi Alliance leader accused the administration of detaining people without trial and demanded greater accountability from security agencies.
“Security agencies must follow the law when pursuing suspected criminals,” he said, insisting that suspects should not be treated in the same manner as innocent members of the public.
Kalonzo also criticised what he described as the use of armed groups against communities, saying investigations and enforcement of the law should remain the responsibility of legitimate security agencies.
Turning to the debate over foreign investment, Kalonzo said Kenya should remain open to investors and specifically defended African business magnate Aliko Dangote’s interest in the country.
He argued that major investors could contribute to economic growth, job creation and expansion of trade if their investments were handled transparently and in the national interest.
Kalonzo linked the debate to the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET), saying the project was conceived during the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki with the involvement of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and himself.
He said the original vision was to transform Lamu into a major regional transport and economic hub.
According to Kalonzo, disagreements surrounding some proposed investments had contributed to delays in implementing major infrastructure projects.
He also referred to past controversies over proposed infrastructure contracts at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, calling for greater transparency in the management of public resources.
Kalonzo said Lamu Port still had the potential to become a major economic gateway and urged the government to accelerate efforts to unlock its full potential.
He said increased investment in Lamu could generate employment, boost trade and strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional commercial hub.
SAMBURU CONCERNS
The opposition leader also turned his attention to Samburu County, where he raised concerns over what he described as attacks against residents and the alleged killing of livestock.
He said livestock remained the backbone of many households in the region and warned that the loss of animals could have devastating economic consequences for affected families.
Kalonzo called for investigations into the reported incidents and demanded compensation for residents who may have suffered losses.
He said security operations must distinguish between suspected criminals and ordinary citizens and should not result in collective punishment of communities.
Kalonzo also sought to clarify his position on President William Ruto, saying referring to the President as a “brother” should not be interpreted as political support or complicity with the administration.
He said political differences should not prevent Kenyans from recognising their shared national identity.
At the same time, he maintained that the government must be held accountable for actions he believes have harmed citizens.
He cited previous periods of political realignment, including the handshake between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and the late Raila Odinga, saying he had maintained his political position even during such shifts.
Kalonzo said his focus remained on ordinary Kenyans facing economic hardship, insecurity and what he described as excessive use of state power.
He pledged to continue speaking out on behalf of citizens affected by alleged unlawful actions and economic difficulties.
The allegations concerning abductions, security operations, livestock killings and disputed investment arrangements are claims by Kalonzo and would require responses and independent verification from the government, security agencies and other relevant authorities.
