Government Updates Death Toll to 39 in Elgeyo Marakwet Mudslide Tragedy as Burials Continue

The government has confirmed 39 deaths, nine people missing, and three survivors still hospitalised following the devastating mudslide that hit parts of Elgeyo Marakwet County earlier this month.

According to the latest update released on November 20, 2025, a multi-agency emergency team continues to coordinate humanitarian response and long-term recovery efforts.

The team has been on the ground since the incident, working closely with the county government to assist approximately 200 affected households whose homes, property, and livelihoods were destroyed.

Burials Underway Across the County

Search and rescue operations were temporarily paused to allow families to conduct burials in an orderly and dignified manner. Two victims were buried in Kibendo, Emsoo Ward, on November 14, while eight others were laid to rest in Marakwet East on November 19.

A major funeral service for 31 victims from Kerio Valley Sub-County will be held on Friday, November 21, at Chesongoch Centre. Of these, 25 victims will be buried together in one location, as agreed upon by the families.

“We are committed to ensuring every victim receives a dignified farewell and that families are supported through this painful period,” said Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.

Infrastructure Restored, Support Ongoing

Critical infrastructure destroyed by the mudslide—including roads, water systems, electricity, bridges, medical facilities, and parts of the local shopping centre—has now been fully restored, allowing the community to resume essential routines. The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) completed power restoration earlier in the week.

The government has consistently deployed humanitarian support, including food and non-food items, casualty evacuation, financial assistance, and payment of all medical and hospital bills for affected families.

“Our focus is on stabilising the situation, supporting survivors, and ensuring no family feels abandoned during this tragedy,” Mwaura stated.

Government Pledges Long-Term Support

Mwaura expressed gratitude to all partners and individuals who have offered support, noting the government’s ongoing commitment to stand with survivors and strengthen resilience against future climate-related disasters.

“We remain conscious of the profound pain these families are going through. The government will continue to walk with them—not just today, but through the long road of recovery,” he said.

He added that the government would cover all burial expenses and continue coordinating assistance until every missing person is accounted for.
