AGOK Reaffirms Commitment to Responsible Gaming Amid Growing Public Scrutiny

In response to rising public interest and national debate over the gaming and gambling sector, the Association of Gaming Operators – Kenya (AGOK) has come forward to clarify its stance, reaffirm industry values, and outline measures aimed at fostering a safer, more accountable gaming environment in the country.

AGOK noted that Kenya’s gaming industry continues to expand rapidly, generating opportunities in economic growth, technological innovation, and job creation.

However, with this growth comes increased responsibility, particularly in protecting young people and vulnerable groups from the negative impacts of gambling.

“The mental health challenges, addiction concerns, and ethical questions associated with gaming are not unique to Kenya—they are global issues that our members take seriously,” AGOK said in a statement.

In the statement further, it stated that’ ‘All AGOK members operate under a unified code of conduct anchored in fairness, transparency, and social responsibility. The association highlighted several initiatives aimed at minimizing harm and promoting ethical gaming.’’

Implementation of advanced age-verification systems to prevent underage access.

Self-exclusion tools that allow users to restrict or permanently block access to gaming platforms.

24/7 toll-free helplines providing confidential mental health and addiction support.

Sponsorship of national campaigns to raise awareness about responsible gaming in partnership with community organisations.

Pushing for Progressive Regulation

AGOK is working closely with the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), civil society, and government agencies to elevate compliance and accountability across the industry. This includes supporting the proposed Gambling Control Bill, which introduces stronger consumer protections and a national self-exclusion register.

Nationwide awareness campaigns to educate the public on responsible gaming.

Advocacy for tools such as deposit limits, time-out options, and real-time betting reminders.

Hosting multi-stakeholder forums to promote ethical leadership and collaborative policy development.

Championing a Balanced Ecosystem

AGOK emphasised the significant role that a regulated gaming sector plays in the Kenyan economy—through job creation, tax revenue, and community empowerment via CSR initiatives. The association reiterated its commitment to ensuring that innovation in the sector does not come at the cost of player well-being.

Media Engagement and a Call for Dialogue

Recognizing the media’s role in shaping public perception and influencing policy, AGOK urged journalists to engage directly with the association when reporting on gaming-related issues.

“We welcome constructive dialogue with all stakeholders—regulators, lawmakers, the media, and civil society. Collaboration is key to building a gaming sector that is both vibrant and responsible,” AGOK concluded.
