Nairobi City County Senator Edwin Sifuna has demanded urgent action from the Senate to expedite investigations into two recent murders at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and a worsening student housing crisis in public universities.
Speaking in the Senate, Sifuna called for immediate action from parliamentary committees on health and education to address the pressing safety and welfare concerns.
The outspoken legislator highlighted two killings that occurred within the same KNH ward in February and July 2025.
“The fact that two patients were murdered in the same ward, months apart, raises disturbing questions about the safety of our hospitals,” he stated.
Sifuna added, “We may be dealing with a serial killer who has gone unnoticed within Kenya’s largest referral facility.”
He has tasked the Senate Health Committee with investigating the incidents, auditing KNH’s security protocols, and examining the continued detention of medically discharged patients.
Separately, Sifuna addressed skyrocketing university hostel fees, which he said are forcing students into unsafe, off-campus housing.
“Students are being forced into slums because they cannot afford the new hostel rates,” he said.
The senator urged the Education Committee to scrutinize the rationale behind the fee hikes and determine if student loan allocations have been adjusted to meet the rising cost of living.
